Caffe Mauro

Italian inspired Deli

Since May brought us Calgarians an early couple weeks of summer-like weather I suddenly remembered all my favorite lunch spots to enjoy a mid day break on a patio. One of my favorite sandwich spots in town is Café Mauro. Located on 10th ave and 8th pretty much tucked away under the railroad bridge is this hidden gem. It is an Italian inspired deli. I am surprised that I don’t hear more about this café from people as it has won several awards in the past, including “best sandwich... [Keep Reading]

The Palomino

BBQ and Rock and Roll

This edition of Thirstday is featuring the Palomino smoke house. In my opinion this is the best BBQ and more specifically the brisket and pulled pork in the city. Each sandwich comes with 2 sides, most popular are the garlic fries and my favorite is when they offer the tortilla soup. The Palomino is conveniently located on the c-train tracks (7th ave) across from the Hyatt on 1st street. They are open 10 am -2am on weekdays and 11am-2am on Saturday and open at 10:30am on Sunday until late.... [Keep Reading]

Sled Island is about to turn 7

Sled Island is going into its 7th year and just announced it’s second wave 2013 line up. The festival will run for 4 days June 19th-22nd Last year the festival was hosted in 38 venues around town. This year offers the same with over 100 visual artists and filmmakers and over 200 musical acts. I have never been able to take full advantage of Sled Island as it falls during the week but this may be the year to get pass for the week. I am always envious of my friends who buy a festival pass... [Keep Reading]

Revolution fitness

A great way to get in shape this summer

This post may appear to be a bit of a contradiction to all my previous posts that mostly contain food, alcoholic beverages and travelling. All those things usually do not fall under the same category as fitness. I will be honest in that this post is a bit of shameless promotion for my wife’s fitness company, but it also helped me lose 30lb a few years ago and keep it off all these years despite my appetite for good food and drink. Revolution Fitness was founded in 2008 by Mallory Faul (... [Keep Reading]

Kauai

Take a trip to the garden Isle

Having travelled to a lot of countries around the world people find it strange that Kauai is high on my list of places to revisit. When most people think of Hawaii they think Waikiki beach, high-rise hotels and tourists in flower shirts walking around with a mai tai in their hand. Kauai offers the exact opposite of that. I did my practicum in university there by fluke. I had always wanted to go somewhere tropical and I figured Hawaii was my best bet to land a... [Keep Reading]

Breakfast and Brunch in YYC

A good spot for weekend breakfast and brunch is always well sought after in Calgary. This has unfortunately resulted in long line-ups on a Saturday and Sunday at any decent spot in this city. My way of dealing with this is to make the most of it and take it for what it is. Once you find a spot that interests you and whomever you are with, grab a coffee to have while... [Keep Reading]

San Sebastian, Spain

Take a trip through Basque Country

One of my favorite spots that I spent some time in over the years is San Sebastian on the west coast of Spain. This region is known as Basque country. I had been to Spain the previous year however I spent all my time on the east cost from Barcelona and down into Morocco. One of my friends met me in Barcelona and had just come from San Sebastian and mentioned how much he liked it so when I booked my next trip to Spain I had to check it out. San Sebastian is only about a 30-minute train... [Keep Reading]

Wine Ink

buying wine made easy

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I am learning about the world of wine; the endless stories and vast amount of information that comes with it. I always try to stop into a new wine shop when I come across one and see what they have to offer.I am usually unimpressed with the service or lack there of. I don’t quite understand why the vast majority of people in the service industry decide that the service part of their job is the least important element. One place that has... [Keep Reading]

Neil Young at the Saddledome

Still rockin at 67

This past Tuesday Calgary had the pleasure of hosting Neil young at the Saddledome. I have been wanting to see him for a while now especially with his band Crazy Horse. The last 2 tours through Calgary, Crazy Horse wasn’t in attendance. With Neil turning 67 just one day before the show I figure this could be one of the last Crazy Horse tours. The stage was simple but very cool featuring an exaggerated set of Fender amps similar to some of his older shows in the 70s-80s complete with... [Keep Reading]

Joanna Borromeo live at The Ironwood

In search of some good live music on a Friday I checked out all the blues bars, Beatnik and The Ironwood in Inglewood. Friday the Ironwood happen to be hosting Joanna Borromeo who is a Calgary local and a very talented musician. I watched a couple YouTube clips and a couple of my co-workers had heard of her and that she was really good live. The Ironwood is situated in Inglewood right on 9th ave set in an old Historic House that has been re-modeled into a restaurant and stage to host live... [Keep Reading]
