JUNO WEEK

Everything You Need To Know. Everything.

It’s officially Juno Week here in Regina! This is the first time in the history of the JUNOS that Regina has been the host city, so it's kind of a big deal. I’m going to give you the run-down: what to expect, where to go, and what not to miss. 2013 JUNO Awards Hype Reel   A lot of people mistakenly think that The JUNOS are a single event: a star-studded walk on the red carpet followed by a televised awards show. But in fact, The JUNOS are an entire week full of live music... [Keep Reading]

End Life On a Good Note

An Apocalyptic Playlist

Rumor has it the world is ending this week.  At least, I think it's this week. (The 21st, I'm pretty sure? I need to start writing stuff like this in my day planner. I'd hate to plan a dental appointment on the last day of the earth.) When I realized we were running out of days I did what seemed necessary: I kissed my husband and thanked him for being so nice to me, I painted a picture of a sunrise, and I made a playlist of songs to listen to as the world ends. I can... [Keep Reading]

The Wooden Sky

The Artesian on 13 - November 26, 2012

The thing about a good live show is that it makes you feel like you're not in your own city, or in your own country, or in your own skin. It's like running away without going anywhere--but when you come back from where you haven't gone, everything is still right where you left it. The Wooden Sky played last night at The Artesian and it was, by all accounts, that kind of show. My friend Becky and I got there early and claimed the best seats in the house (balcony; front row... [Keep Reading]

3 Good Shows

Something for Everyone

There are so many bands playing in Regina this week that you'd need five yous and a time travel machine to see them all. I think you can see your problem: you're four yous and a time travel machine short. It's not the end of the world, but it does mean you'll need to do some picking and choosing. If you're lazy about that sort of thing, read on; these are the three bands I'd pick and choose if I were you.  1. The Wooden Sky (November 25, The Artesian on 13th)It... [Keep Reading]

Metric and Stars

Brandt Centre - Friday, November 16, 2012

I was standing next to a really loud, really drunk girl. She was clutching her purse tight to her neck and screaming at the top of her lungs, "I LOVE YOU, EMILY HAINES! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!" over and over. When she noticed me, she grabbed my arm and leaned heavily into my shoulder, a concerned look on her sweaty red face. "I'm sorry for screaming in your ear," she screamed into my ear. "I just love her. I love her so much. Isn't she just the best? I LOVE... [Keep Reading]

Art Bound Books

Something To Do With All That Spare Time

This morning I found out that the Dunlop Art Gallery here in Regina is hosting an art journal project. The gallery supplies a blank, 6x8 sketchbook which you fill up according to one of the ten given themes and bring back within a year. Paint, draw, doodle, sketch, write, stamp, drool on it; they don't care. Just do what you do. The sketchbooks will then be put on display in the art gallery, to be treated with a bunch of respect and admiration by all of the gallery's pretentious art... [Keep Reading]

Four iPhone Apps YOU NEED RIGHT NOW

Enhance Your Life Some More

I used to be adamantly against smart phones. "Robots!" I said. "They know too much!" I said. "I don't have that kind of money!" I said. But, you know, mostly the thing about the money. And then, because it's inevitable for every single one of us regardless of everything, I became the owner of an iPhone.   I still think they know too much, and am very weirded out by the intelligence and vast abilities of the little computer I carry around in my... How Royal Canoe Simultaneously Made and Wrecked My Day

Why Do Cancelled Shows Happen to Good People?

Today was going to be a ridiculously good day. I was going to walk down to the bakery, spend some time (money) at the mall, teach some piano lessons, and then finish off at The Exchange with Royal Canoe. Obviously, the show was the main thing. Have you heard these guys? They happened in Winnipeg, of all places. I don't even know what genre they are; it's like they've collected the discarded scraps of convention and technique and sound from under the tables of varied hip-hop and... [Keep Reading]
