Explaining a Mexican Carnival

A Photo Journal Revealing the Flair of the Mexican Fair

Carnivals and fairs around the world all follow the same rule book for cheap entertainment: greasy junk food, games designed to rip you off by toothless carnies and unsafe ways to spin in circles. But in Mexico, where shenanigans are already higher and overall standards lower, the traveling carnival in Sayulita is a guaranteed night of drunken laughs and head scratching.Fancy throwing a few darts to win a bottle of tequila or a bucket of groceries? How about some rocks and bottle smashing for a... [Keep Reading]

Even with the continuing scare of ‘el Mafioso’ in the United States, cheap direct flights to the area keep cold Canadians flocking to this safe sun spot regardless. [The only danger to an American here would be leaving Mexico with a Canadian accent.] Cancun and the Yucatan might have the glorious crystal blue Caribbean waters but the western Mexican coast... Battling the Dog for the Christmas Goat Leg

Holiday Meals Gone Wrong

One of my most memorable holiday meals began when I answered the door to find a neighbour shoving a giant, freshly butchered goat’s hind leg into my arms.“Fresh, Fresh!” he ensured with his minimal English even though the smell was enough to verify the raw state of death’s freshness.“Merry Christmas!” he laughed as he closed the door and waltzed away like a Santa Claus out of PETA hell.So there I stood, 12 years old and petrified with confusion, grasping the... Sleeping Amidst the Monks

Leaving the Tourist Trails for Thailand’s Temples

“Oh, no no no…not what we do here.” The elder monk said, completely rejecting my request while never breaking his full, enlightened smile.I felt gutted. I had spent the entire day renting a scooter and getting lost through the winding and poorly labeled mountainside that overlooks Chiang Mai. The end to my quest: the happiest dismissal possible. After nearing my second month of backpacking South East Asia, I was in need of a reset. Through the grapevine I had heard of a... [Keep Reading]

Top 10 Greatest LSD Quotes

+ Acid Talk & Guacamole in T.O's 'Last Liberal Cinema'

After nearly six months of working on the road across Canada, I find myself spending a rare day off in a random home 'cinema' near Toronto's Kensington Market, making guacamole and discussing LSD with a cartoon cinefile, a traveler from Croatia and two chemistry exchange students from China. Ok, let's back up.So I am an events and live music junkie who perpetually checks out posters and billboards in each place I visit. With the giant, three letter combination of LSD and a... [Keep Reading]
