Jodie lives in and loves Winnipeg, Manitoba with her partner Jamil and dog Jackson. By day, she is the event planner for The North End Community Renewal Corporation and by night she is an Arts and Culture Reporter and Sex Columnist for The Manitoban, anti-street harassment crusader and one half of the Hollaback! Winnipeg team, and a vegan foodie. You can find her at the curling club, throwing rocks for her team Curl Interrupted on Friday nights; getting elbow-deep in the batter of some baking experiment; at the farmer's market; amidst the pile of books and nail polish in her 'fort femme'; or drinking a pot of tea to herself.

Rainbow Trout Music Festival 2013 Lineup

Support Your Local Indie Festival

If you've been lucky enough to attend one of the past three Rainbow Trout Music Festival and Fishing Derbies in the past, then you know what a solid time there is to be had. It started as the most DIY of festivals - about 50 friends and a few bands hauling a stage and sound equipment out to a rural trout pond for a few days of fun. The word started to spread and the festival grew and last year it got legit, finding a permanent home on the banks of the Roseau River with the generous hosting... [Keep Reading]

Oh My, Orgone

Jazz Fest 2013 Club Series Opening Night

It's a slightly cool summer evening, the patio outside the iconc Pyramid Cabaret is filled with friends having drinks, music is pumping from the speakers, and bikes overflow the bike racks and fences out front. It's a Monday, which can only mean one thing: it's Jazz Fest. There is no other event that brings the crowds in droves every weeknight. For five nights, music lovers will show up at work with circles under their eyes and a smile on their faces after spending all night... [Keep Reading]

Out This Week!

Our 5-minute reviews of some albums hot and fresh out the kitchen

Each week at the Rooster, we bring you reviews on some of the week's new releases. This week, we are pumping jams from Surfer Blood, Sonny and the Sunsets, and CSS. Their last album was a breakup record, but this album is a record of loss of a different kind. Inspired to write after the murder of a friend and paranormal experiences, Sonny Smith takes on death and the afterlife in a way that's not necessarily fun, but not morose either. It's weird and strange and novel as an... [Keep Reading]

Fast Five With Danny Smiles

A quick chat with our favorite Top Chef Canada finalist

The minute my partner and I started watching this season's Top Chef Canada, we immediately took a liking to the smiling young chef with the tattoos. When he responded to gaining a spot in the final 3 last week by asking fellow chef Jonathan Goodyear, "What do you want to drink? The whole fridge? That's what I'm thinking" and one of his signature grins, I knew we made the right choice pulling for Smiles all season. Easily the most likable contestant, Smiles has been... [Keep Reading]

Fit for the Strip

New restaurant, Fitzroy soon to join Sherbrook Strip

Nestled in between a bakery and a chain sandwich joint, I noticed some kraft-paper covered windows where the condo office used to be. The fact that there was a condo office and that there currently is a chain sandwich restaurant on Sherbrook street is weird, but there are several businesses trying to infuse heart and soul back into the West Broadway/Wolseley Neighbourhood. Fitzroy restaurant, opening pending those pesky city permits, hopes to be one of those places - celebrating West Broadway... [Keep Reading]

I've Got a Total Crush On.....

Juniper Ridge

I came across Juniper Ridge's beautiful things in one of those weird ways we seem to see things these days: someone posted something on Instagram, someone liked their photo on Facebook and it showed up in my feed, or whatever. Regardless, this is one of those things that stopped me in my tracks and didn't just make me double tap an Instagram photo or press like - I was totally intrigued by the concept and resulting goods.  Juniper Ridge makes some of my most favorite things: tea... Out This Week!

Our 5-minute reviews of some albums hot and fresh out the kitchen

Each week at the Rooster, we bring you reviews on some of the week's new releases. This week, we bring you offerings from Imaginary Cities, Mount Kimbie, and Hooded Fang. Fun and synth-y and a bit to gritty and grimy to be in an ad, although it will make you feel like(to quote Cher Horowitz) you're in a Noxema commercial, this is a perfectly enjoyable third offering from Hooded Fang. A gang of seven originally, they are pared down to a four-piece outfit on this album. They borrow... [Keep Reading]

First Looks at 1st Break

Film festival for emerging filmmakers takes place this weekend

What if you could see the films that David Lynch produced when he was an emeriging filmmaker? That's the idea behind the very first 1st Break Film Festival, happening this weekend in Winnipeg. The fest is put on by two emerging filmmakers themselves, who wanted to show off their work, but didn't feel ready for bigger festivals with more established filmmakers. So they did what you do in Winnipeg: if you don't see what you want, you make it yourself.  Taking place this... [Keep Reading]

Getting stuffed on Broadway

Stuff It food truck review

Last summer, Winnipeg relaxed its strict food truck bylaws allowing for us to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to excellent and interesting street food. Instead of just being relegated to hotdogs and fries(although a little street meat isn't a bad thing!) we now have trucks slinging smoothies, wings, Japanese food, sandwiches, and tacos. I had to head down to Broadway where most of the food trucks park themselves during lunch hour and try one out. The first week of warm... [Keep Reading]

Yvette van Boven returns with her third book in the Home Made series. Following up Home Made and Home Made Winter, this summer edition of her popular cookbooks is definitely a necessary addition to your collection and perfect for summer entertaining.
