After beginning a head-turning season on the North Shore this past January at the Volcom Pipeline Pro, Hawaii's John John Florence who among others surfs for Spy Optic, O'Neill and Vans Footwear went on an absolute tear, rocking the ASP World Surf Tour and putting himself in title contention for the majority of the season. This is no small feat, considering that most surfers his age are simply fighting for a spot among the world's elite and clawing tooth and nail just to stay on tour.
John John however is cut from a different cloth and this has been very apparent since a very young age. The Hawaii native has been putting the industry on notice since his days as a frothy young grom and in the last few years has absolutely turned the sport on it's head, combining powerful barrel riding with mouth-watering aerials which included in a long list of accolades earned him $10,000 in this year's Kustom Air Strike. There is seriously nothing this young man cannot do when it comes to riding a wave and he has proved that consistently throughout the year.
He has made covers and starred in video sections all season long and capped things off just a few days ago by surfing strongly at the planet's most revered contest, the Billabong Pipeline Master which was eventually won by this year's ASP World Champion, Joel Parkinson who claimed the title in dramatic fashion fending off the likes of Florence and Kelly Slater all year long to lock down top spot.
JJF's surfing was not limited to contests however, as I mentioned before his video compilations have been gaining serious praise throughout the sport and the industry that supports it by fusing together the aforementioned skill sets into a few minutes of video that leaves seasoned pros twice his age shaking in their booties at what the future of his career holds. The latest and certainly not smallest of his achievements was capturing the cover of hot new surf magazine Monster Children with a massive Alley-Oop arial maneuver which could in itself have won competitions throughout the season.
So have a look as Vans proudly presents this prodigy turned phenom in not only a great cover shot, but also the trailer for his new pace-setting video part entitled "Done" which sees John John on display like never before.
