One Billion Rising - Louis’ Latin Night, February 15th
Local organizations unite to help end violence against women
Wed, 01/30/2013
One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.
One billion women violated is an atrocity.
One billion women dancing is a revolution.
In an effort to mobilize men and women all over the world to end violence against women, V-day is celebrating their 15th anniversary with One Billion Rising.
Centered around the use of dance, the event is resonating throughout the world, from Argentina, to Germany, to the Phillippines. If you want to follow all the global happenings, check out the One Billion Rising blog at http://www.onebillionrising.org/blog.
And Saskatoon is among the communities showing solidarity for the cause:
On Feb 15th, The U of S Club Hispanico Student Group, The College of Medicine Health Everywhere group, The Saskatoon Women's Community Coalition, The University of Saskatchewan Women’s Centre, and Canada World Youth will be hosting a fundraiser at Louis, called One Billion Rising – Louis’ Latin Night. This event is in conjunction with the awareness campaign V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women (www.vday.org). The proceeds raised for this event will be going to an organization in Nicaragua known as Fundacion Entre Mujeres, which promotes women's empowerment, and combats gender-based violence in that country (http://www.fundacionentremujeres.org/).
The night will be filled with Latin dance performances, basic salsa lessons from Latin dance instructors, authentic Latin food, a silent auction and speakers providing information on the grassroots work that is happening all around the world to end the violence.
